Week 1 July 14th 2021
Aimée, Amanda, Willow, Steve, Patrick, Pat and Jacquie all went to ‘Dig-it’ at Crocus
Fields, Saffron Walden for our very first Mencap ‘Dig-it’ club. We met our team leader, Emma, who moved to the area a few months ago from London.
Emma showed us all the wonderful vegetables, fruit and flowers and told us about the plans
for helping to continue to bring our community allotment back to life. She then put us to work weeding, sorting pots, clearing out the poly tunnel and looking at gardening books to think about what things we might like to plant in the raised planter when it’s ready.
We met the friendly expert allotmenteer from the next plot - Duncan - he let us taste
chocolate mint - tastes like mint Aero - and spearmint and then gave some cuttings to plant.
Emma showed us how to plant them into little pots - water them and now we just need to
keep our fingers crossed. We washed some strawberries he gave us too - Willow loooooved
them!
After a lovely sunny lunch (thanks Steve for the mobile tea and biccy club!) there was
clearing up, picking a few flowers and courgettes to take home and photos for our website
and Facebook page. I think we all learned a lot today - thank you Emma for making it so fun
and interesting.
We all really dug dig-it and can’t wait to go again next week!
