Getting ready for Autumn- growing our skills, happiness & confidence!
Our summer has flown by, apples are now ready to pick and the autumn raspberries are living up to their name giving us lots of lovely fruit.
The past few weeks have been busy on the plot, but we always start with a cuppa and a chat while we decide what we’d like to do.
We have been (……wait for it!) …. Harvesting leeks, tomatoes, courgettes raspberries, lettuce, peppers, and chillies. Recycling spent tomato and flower plants into the compost bins. Tidying plants and beds, planting seeds for winter crops of spring onions, Pak Choi, lettuces and spinach. Talking about what we do with the things we take home with us - we use NO chemicals or insecticides and yet our crops are so beautiful and tasty. There has also been some painting of the lovely decking area - thanks to Marion and Barry for taking this on - it will make the wood last longer if we do this every year.
Amanda and Willow are our members who have been with us from day 1. Willow is at college now but always comes in the holidays. Amanda is able to do everything from preparing seed trays to weeding and harvesting - the whole life cycle of nurturing and growing food. The new path works are imminent and so important for Amanda and others to access the whole plot. Watch this space for a ‘new path’ celebration!
On one of the photos our newest member Charis is standing in front of the tallest bean plant we’ve ever seen - it reminded us that we’ll be going to see Jack & The Beanstalk Panto in December. Charis has brought her fun and happy personality to our group - taking on every task with enthusiasm and has so many good ideas already.
Last but not least- about our first photo! Audley End House had a show garden at the Gardener's World show recently, and they kindly donated some of the plants to Dig-It & Growability. We are so grateful to them and to our lovely Lisa who collected so many plants you’d never believe it! They are all beautiful and will be given pride of place around the plots. They are all perennials too, which means they shouldn’t die in winter. We are so grateful that the guys at Audley End thought of us and Dig-It and look forward to seeing the plants grow in future years.
We hope you like our photos!
